Sinkholes and voids can form due to natural or human activity. The main causes of voids or sinkholes are:

• Natural soil processes causing shifts and cave formation or voiding. That is underlying weak soils or dissolution of rock may cause natural formations of deep caves/voids leading to surface depressions (sinkhole) or deep shafts (voiding).
• Flooding or rainfall leading to water migrating through soil due to natural flow paths or poor drainage installation (human activity), causing migration of soil and erosion due to stripping away silts and smaller particles and saturating the clay causing weakened soil and eventual loss of bearing and collapse.
• Abandoned mineshafts with capping layers: Mineshafts with capping layers rely on capping layer for support over the abandoned shaft. If this capping layer is compromised and destabilised, then the mineshaft will be exposed causing soil collapse and exposure of large void.
• Earthworks reinstated with poorly compacted backfill: Poorly compacted backfill will naturally be aerated and have pockets of air and water. As the backfill consolidated under its own weight, or even worse under the weight of a floating slab, it will start to consolidate causing surface depression.
